Metro Pacific and DMCI Holdings-led Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) will spend almost P186.5 million to lay over 25 kilometers of pipelines in Valenzuela City as part of its service expansion program in the northern part of its concession area. The infrastructure project will allow the delivery of surface water to more than 7,500 households in the municipality while connecting some 4,700 new accounts to the company’s water network.
Once the lines are fully energized by the end of April, water availability in areas of Valenzuela City will also increase from 18 hours to 24 hours. Water pressure will also improve from 14 to 24 psi (pounds per square inch). It takes about 7 psi for water to reach the second floor of a building.
Since February this year, Maynilad has been energizing segments of its newly laid pipelines to benefit several Valenzuela communities, namely Hiyas Homes and Fortune Village 5 to 7, among others. These areas have previously relied on groundwater from deep wells.
“Groundwater over-extraction poses serious long-term threats to communities and the environment. We are accelerating our expansion projects because we want to provide more people with safe and reliable access to surface water,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky Vargas.
To lessen inconvenience for motorists, Maynilad is closely coordinating with the officials of the subdivisions, concerned homeowners associations, and the city government of Valenzuela to manage the traffic flow along the project areas. The work sites are also properly barricaded, with appropriate lighting and traffic/warning signs.
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is a concessionaire of the MWSS for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres & Sta Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of the Holy Spirit & Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Hi-way), Caloocan, Pasay, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; Cavite City, and the towns of Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
