Maynilad recovers 913 MLD of water

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) recovered 913 million liters of water per day (MLD) since it started its campaign against water loss or Non-Revenue Water (NRW) in 2008. This recovered volume is enough to supply about 1.5 million households—or an estimated 6.4 million people—with potable, reliable water.

A component of Maynilad’s NRW Reduction Program is the regular replacement of old pipes. From 2008, Maynilad was able to replace a total of 1,513 kilometers of pipes in several areas of the West Zone, particularly in Central Manila where water loss was highest and water pipes the oldest.

The company continues to operate state-of-the-art leak detection technologies. This resulted to the repair of more than 27,000 leaks in 2015, bringing its total number of leaks repaired to over 262,000 since 2008.

Maynilad’s NRW Reduction program includes meter and pressure management, active leakage control, primary line assessment, selective pipe replacement, and District Metered Area (DMA) management. The company has spent some ₱18 billion for this program since 2008.

For 2016, Maynilad is investing over ₱2 billion for NRW reduction, of which ₱1.1 billion will be allotted for pipe replacements in Caloocan, Malabon, Kawit, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Pasay, Manila and Quezon City. Meanwhile, ₱260 million will be spent for leak repair operations. The rest of the budget will go to leak detection, network diagnostics, meter management, and replacement of old water meters.

“Water recovery of this magnitude is proof positive that our campaign against water loss has been effective. Over the last three years, in fact, we have been seeing a steady decline in pipe repairs owing to our infrastructure enhancements. We will persist in this campaign so we can make our operations more efficient,” Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
