Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) recovered more than 117 million liters of water per day (MLD) in 2014, successfully reducing its Non-Revenue Water (NRW) level to 33%. The water recovered—equivalent to filling up 47 Olympic-size swimming pools—is enough to supply the water needs of some 491,400 people.
Maynilad’s accomplishment was achieved after it replaced some 170 kilometers of old, leaky pipes and repaired almost 37,000 leaks across the West Zone. The company also replaced 236,000 water meters to address water losses due to inaccurate meter reading.
This year, Maynilad has earmarked P3.2 billion to further reduce water lost in its concession area. This includes P2.1 for the replacement of some 175 kilometers of pipelines in Caloocan, Cavite, Manila and Parañaque and P680 million for the replacement of 128,000 water meters.
“Water lost in the network is water that could have been distributed and used by our customers. Hence, we continue investing in our NRW Reduction Program, which will promote better operational efficiency and enhanced customer service,†said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas.
Maynilad’s holistic approach to NRW reduction—including its asset replacement and upgrades, personnel development, and use of state-of-the-art leak detection technology—has been recognized by the International Water Association in the 2013 and 2014 Project Innovation Awards and Project Innovation Awards-Development.
Maynilad is an agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain areas), Quezon City (certain areas), Makati (certain areas), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon—all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario—all in Cavite Province.
