Maynilad recently started its intensified repair of leaking pipes along Quirino Highway, Novaliches, Quezon City, as part of the company’s efforts to counter a possible water crisis when El Niño worsens in the coming months.
The ongoing repair activities in Quirino Highway involve the replacement of leaking service pipes tapped to the 200-mm primary line along the major road.
The defective pipes in Quirino are among the 2,965 leaks in the West Zone that the company has identified for repair. Several repair teams are working simultaneously in Quirino Highway and other areas in the north region of the West Zone concession to speed up the fixing of the leaks.
Maynilad embarked on a massive leak repair program after President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo issued a 60-day moratorium on all regulations, ordinances, memoranda, circulars, and other issuances that will prohibit or restrict the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) and its concessionaires from doing leak repairs. The directive was given to allow the concessionaires to pursue their programs to reduce the impact of El Niño on the water supply of Metro Manila and adjoining provinces.
Maynilad has earmarked P314 million for its leak repair program, which aims to recover up to 40 million liters of lost water per day and turn this into additional supply especially during the long dry season.
