Over 216,000 indigent households in the West Zone now enjoy potable and affordable water straight from their faucets after becoming beneficiaries of Maynilad’s Bayan Tubig program.
The number marks a record increase from the 110,000 households in January 2007 — barely three years since Maynilad was re-privatized under new management of DMCI Holdings, Inc. and Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.
Under its Bayan Tubig program, Maynilad partners with community leaders in mobilizing residents that the company could not serve under regular terms due to land-ownership problems. Maynilad also offers a flexible, long-term payment scheme for water service applications in order to provide low-income families with access to clean, affordable and potable water.
Maynilad recently filed for a 15-year term extension of its Concession Agreement with the government. The extension will allow the company to increase its investments from P206 Billion to P506 Billion and expand its pro-poor and community development projects. It will also reduce future tariff increases by as much as 75% and keep Maynilad’s water and sewerage services affordable for consumers.
