West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) has resumed the construction of its P1-billion sewage treatment plant (STP) in Brgy. Cupang, Muntinlupa City following the implementation of general community quarantine in Metro Manila.Â
This STP, called the Cupang Water Reclamation Facility, is part of Maynilad’s long-term plan to expand sewerage coverage in its concession area and to help reduce pollution loading in the Manila Bay. Once completed by end of 2020, it can serve around 281,000 Muntinlupa residents.Â
“With the easing of the enhanced community quarantine restrictions, we have hit the ground running and resumed construction works on our major capital expenditure projects, including this new facility in Cupang that will enable us to meet our long-term sewerage commitments,†said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.Â
From only two operational STPs in 1997 when MWSS operations were first privatized, Maynilad now runs 22 wastewater treatment facilities with a combined treatment capacity of around 662,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day. Investments in wastewater worth P40 billion have already been poured into the West Zone concession to date.Â
Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base. It is the agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain portions), Quezon City (certain portions), Makati (west of South Super Highway), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province.
