Maynilad cleans 78k household septic tanks in 2017

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) cleaned some 78,300 septic tanks from 89,000 households within its concession area, enabling it to collect and treat over 159,300 cubic meters (cu.m.) of septage in 2017.

Maynilad’s sanitation program includes the deployment of Vacuum Truck Units (VTUs) that collect septage from septic tanks for proper treatment. The wastewater is treated before discharge to the environment, and the solids are converted to fertilizer or soil conditioner.

Since its re-privatization in 2007, Maynilad has already desludged around 579,000 septic tanks and treated over 1,000,000 cu.m. of septage. Households should avail of Maynilad’s septic tank cleaning services every five to seven years to prevent clogging and overflow, which could lead to contamination of water bodies and health problems from exposure to harmful effluents.

Maynilad has allocated ₱318 million for the purchase of 56 new VTUs from 2018 to 2022 so it can offer septic tank cleaning services to more customers. These include smaller VTUs (4-cu.m. capacity) that can enter narrow alleyways so inaccessible houses may be reached and provided desludging services.

“Our customers have a role to play in ensuring the continued protection of community health and the environment, and that is to avail of Maynilad’s septic tank cleaning service once it is offered in their community. Every one’s participation will go a long way in keeping our waterways clean,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.

Also part of Maynilad’s wastewater management program is the conduct of sewer network maintenance and sewer manhole cleaning—all meant to ensure proper collection of harmful effluents and prevent its direct flow to bodies of water.
