Maynilad celebrates Global Handwashing Day 2016

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) taught some 2,000 school children proper handwashing in line with its week-long campaign to mark the Global Handwashing Day 2016.
The Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is an international advocacy dedicated to promote the value of proper handwashing with clean water and soap, which is a very effective and affordable way of preventing diseases.

Maynilad visited seven schools and one community in Caloocan, Malabon, and Muntinlupa from October 8 to 14 to teach elementary students proper handwashing steps and the value of water through fun and engaging water education games. Hygiene kits (inclusive of toothbrush, toothpaste, soap and towel) were also given to all GHD participants.

This year’s GHD celebrations were conducted in partnership with various community stakeholders: local government units, Department of Education, and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez stressed the importance of clean hands in preventing the spread of diseases such as pneumonia and diarrhea. “Kids are more exposed to various bacteria and illnesses. Through Maynilad’s regular participation in the GHD, we hope to instill the practice of proper handwashing to them early on, and eventually, take part in creating a healthier community,” he added.

Maynilad is a regular partner of the UNICEF and other advocacy groups in the observance of Global Handwashing Day, which is held every October 15 and celebrated in over 1,000,000 schools in 100 countries by 200 million people.
