West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) installed 152 kilometers of water pipes in 2014, increasing its water distribution line to 7,458 kilometers—63% longer than the length of the distribution network it inherited when the MPIC-DMCI Consortium took over operations in 2007.
Maynilad’s pipe-laying projects have enabled it to expand its customer base to 1,190,062 accounts by 2014, or 5% higher than the prior year’s 1,129,497 accounts.
“Part of our modernization plan for the West Zone was to extend our distribution system so we could reach more areas that still have no water. As a result, we ended 2014 with a service coverage of 91.6%. This is a significant improvement from only 77.8% in 2006,†said Maynilad President and CEO Ricky P. Vargas.
This year, the company earmarked some P1.4 billion for service expansion projects in portions of Caloocan, Cavite, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Parañaque and Valenzuela. Meanwhile, more than P1.3 billion has been set aside to lay primary lines in Caloocan, Cavite and Pasay that will connect more areas to Maynilad’s network.
Maynilad is the agent and contractor of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (certain areas), Quezon City (certain areas), Makati (certain areas), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon—all in Metro Manila; the cities of Cavite, Bacoor and Imus, and the towns of Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario—all in Cavite Province.
