Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad), the private water concessionaire for the West Zone, generated more than 350,000 jobs since its re-privatization in 2007. 

These jobs, which include those generated by contractors and suppliers that Maynilad commissioned, were required to meet the company’s Php109-billion worth of capital expenditure projects from 2007 to 2020. 

Among its Capex initiatives are the massive rehabilitation and strategic replacement of old pipelines; laying of new pipes to unserved areas, installation of valves and other measuring devices across its water infrastructure network, and construction of new pumping stations, reservoirs and treatment facilities. 

“Even as our infrastructure projects bring potable water to more West Zone communities, it also helps to keep the economy going through the creation of jobs. We are committed to continue generating employment opportunities through our service improvement projects, notwithstanding the effects of the pandemic on our operations,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez. 

Maynilad is the largest private water concessionaire in the Philippines in terms of customer base.  It is a concessionaire of the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which is composed of the cities of Manila (all but portions of San Andres & Sta Ana), Quezon City (west of San Juan River, West Avenue, EDSA, Congressional, Mindanao Avenue, the northern part starting from the Districts of the Holy Spirit & Batasan Hills), Makati (west of South Super Hi-way), Caloocan, Pasay, Parañaque, Las Piñas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas and Malabon all in Metro Manila; Cavite City, and the towns of Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario, all in Cavite Province. 

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) bagged three Excellence and three Merit Awards in the recently concluded virtual ceremony of the 18^th Philippine Quill Awards.

Excellence Awards were given to the company’s crisis communications program “Explaining the rotational water service interruption in the West Zone”, and wastewater programs “Kubeta Talks – Let’s Talk Dirty” and “Golden Kubeta Awards – Bringing Wastewater Conversations to the Mainstream”.

Meanwhile, Merit Awards were given to Maynilad’s social media tool “Maynilad Simpleng Ginhawa Online Videos”, and COVID-19 communications programs “Development of the Post-ECQ Plan – Workplace Re-entry Guidelines for Maynilad Employees” and “Maynilad Post-ECQ Sanitation Service Information Campaign”.

“This recognition from the IABC is a huge honor for our organization. It will serve as inspiration for us to keep striving for excellence in the development of communications initiatives that serve our customers and other stakeholders,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez.

Organized by the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), the Philippine Quill is the foremost mark of excellence in business communication, recognizing the most effective and innovative communication initiatives in the country.

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad), together with the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources, honored 19 “water champions” during the 6^th World Water Day Awards 2021, the culminating event of the country’s celebration of World Water Day. 

The World Water Day Awards honors champions for water and the environment—individuals, government agencies, private organizations, and programs that made great contributions in achieving water and environmental sustainability in the Philippines. 

Recognized this year for their exemplary water management and environmental conservation efforts were the water districts of Metro Naga, Silay City and Davao City.

Also awarded were LAPOSA Irrigators Association, Inc, Padada Irrigators Association, Inc. (both from Davao Del Sur), Anopog Paglaum Irrigators Association, Inc. in Cebu, Macagatal Irrigators Association in Pampanga, and the Cagayan River Basin Management Council for their excellent management of the irrigation systems and river basins in their areas. 

Government agencies—namely, the Municipality of Kalayaan in Laguna and San Pedro City’s Sub-Water Quality Management Area—were honored for their solid waste management projects that protect Laguna Lake. Antipolo City was also recognized for its Hinulugang Taktak Protected Landscape Project. 

The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Quezon City Female Dormitory was recognized for its support of the DENR-led Battle for Manila Bay program, through its La Mesa Watershed protection and conservation activities, as well as the National Historical Commission of the Philippines’ Museo El Deposito, for its water education efforts. 

Meanwhile, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte was conferred the Maynilad Water Warrior Award for Advocacy Leadership for her strong advocacy for climate justice, and excellent environmental management initiatives. 

Several water conservation initiatives and environmental projects were also recognized during the World Water Day Awards: Tubig Load Program (Villages Water Supply System), Walk the Line Project (BP Waterworks), Watershed Protection Project (Masungi Georeserve Foundation), “Adopt-a-Site” Watershed Rehabilitation Program (Davao City Water District), and Project Water-Energy-Nutrient Nexus in the Cities of the Future (NexCities).

The World Bank created the UoF diagnostic tool and action-planning methodology to help utilities assess their service, including the development of an immediate 100-day action plan to help them overcome challenges and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

Based on the UoF assessment, Maynilad ranked as “Utility of the Future” in one program criterion; as “World-Class” in seven criteria, and as “Well-Performing” in two other criteria. West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) is targeting to complete within 2021 its construction of three new Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs), which can provide sewerage service to almost 700,000 residents in the cities of Muntinlupa and Valenzuela. 

These STPs—currently being constructed in Barangays Cupang and Tunasan in Muntinlupa, and in Barangay Marulas in Valenzuela—can treat up to 126,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, thus helping to reduce pollution load in the Manila Bay. 

The Manuel V. Pangilinan-led water company invested around P 7.15 Billion for these three new STPs and accompanying conveyance systems, adding to the 22 Maynilad wastewater facilities that are currently operational and serving West Zone customers. 

“We are glad that these new STPs and conveyance systems are finally nearing completion. While pandemic-related constraints continue to hinder our manpower deployment, we will strive to get these new facilities running and serving communities within the year,” said Maynilad President and CEO Ramoncito S. Fernandez. 

From only two operational STPs in 1997 when MWSS operations were first privatized, Maynilad now runs 22 wastewater facilities with a combined treatment capacity of around 664,000 cubic meters per day after having invested around P 42 billion in wastewater projects.

West Zone concessionaire Maynilad Water Services, Inc. (Maynilad) is offering septic tank cleaning services to its residential and semi-business customers this March in select parts of Caloocan, Las Piñas, Makati, Malabon, Manila, Muntinlupa, Parañaque, Pasay, Quezon City, Valenzuela, and in Cavite Province at no extra cost.

The company has adopted new and more stringent protocols in the conduct of desludging services to ensure the safety of its customers who will avail of the septic tank cleaning. Maynilad requires all of its desludging personnel and vacuum truck unit operators to wear personal protective equipment (PPE), practice physical distancing, and undertake extra disinfection procedures to protect against the spread of COVID-19. 

“We have made our already-stringent desludging safety protocols even stricter, to assure our customers that we are taking all necessary steps to protect them from possible COVID-19 infection as we deliver our desludging services in their homes,” said Maynilad COO Randy T. Estrellado, adding that customers should avail of the service because it helps to protect community health and the environment.

Malagasang I-A and I-B in Imus City; and in Poblacion and Santa Rosa I in Noveleta, Cavite may avail of the company’s septic tank cleaning services at no extra cost. Septic tank cleaning service normally costs around PhP5,000 per truck.
