Maynilad, the private water concessionaire for the West Zone of the greater Metro Manila area, now provides 202,400 households with a 20% discount that is intended to benefit low-income families with direct water service connections.
In March 2008, Maynilad started granting the discount to customers who consume 10 cubic meters of water or less. The move was made in the assumption that these customers would mostly be low income households that cannot afford to spend as much on their water bill. Since then, these households have seen a decrease in their monthly water billing from P117.34 to P96.08.
“Maynilad will continue to provide affordable potable water to the poorest communities in Metro Manila since we realize that they are most exploited and end up paying much more for their water supply needs than those with Maynilad water connections.†said Rogelio L. Singson, president of Maynilad.
Aside from providing discounts to households with low water consumption, Maynilad also organizes and works with communities of informal settlers so they can also have access to affordable potable water.
Maynilad is the water and wastewater services provider for the West Zone of the Greater Manila Area, which includes certain portions of Manila, Quezon City and Makati, the whole Caloocan, Pasay, Paranaque, Las Pinas, Muntinlupa, Valenzuela, Navotas, and Malabon, and parts of Cavite, including Cavite City, Bacoor, Imus, Kawit, Noveleta and Rosario.
Maynilad Water Services, Inc. is owned and managed by DMCI-MPIC Water Company, Inc. (DMWCI), a joint venture between Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC) and DMCI Holdings, Inc. (DMCIHI). The consortium took control of Maynilad on January 24, 2007.
